Insurance agencies and brokers: licensing company data to AI

Independent agencies and brokers have years of service workflow data: quote requests, endorsements, certificate requests and claims follow-up. Buyers find that useful, but insurance data is regulated. Agencies are financial institutions under Gramm-Leach-Bliley, many states have adopted insurance data security laws, and health information from life, health and benefits lines is outside what we handle.

What insurance agency data is valuable to AI buyers?

Service tickets and email for endorsements, COIs and renewals
High-volume, well-defined service work.
Agency workflow and procedure manuals
Agency-owned process documentation.
Commercial lines submission workflows, de-identified
How risk information is gathered and marketed to carriers.
Internal staff chat
Coordination between producers, account managers and CSRs.

What are the risks specific to insurance agencies and brokers?

Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act

Nonpublic personal information about consumers is protected, and sharing it with nonaffiliated third parties is restricted. Personal-lines client data should be excluded.

State insurance data security laws

Many states have adopted versions of the NAIC Insurance Data Security Model Law (#668), which require a security program and third-party service provider oversight.

Health information

Life, health, disability and benefits lines involve health information. We do not handle health data; exclude these lines completely.

Carrier agency agreements

Agency agreements with carriers often restrict use of carrier data and systems.

What should never leave?

  • Personal-lines client NPI
  • Health, life, disability and benefits data
  • Claims files with medical information
  • Driver records (MVRs) and credit-based scores
  • Carrier portal data

We do not handle health information under any circumstances. See Is it safe?

Qualification checklist

  • Personal lines and benefits are in separate books that will not be connected
  • Carrier agency agreements have been checked
  • Your state's insurance data security requirements are known
  • The buyer passes your third-party service provider review

Questions

Can an insurance agency license its email to AI?

Only after removing consumer nonpublic personal information and all health information, which in practice means a narrow commercial-lines or internal-only scope.
